In a time when fashion megabrands struggle to resonate with customers, smaller brands face mounting pressure to chase growth beyond their control and dilute their point of view to fill in the gap and keep their businesses afloat. 31-year-old designer Nia Thomas tunes out the noise and adopts another approach with her Mexico City-based resortwear label, Nia Thomas. On a sunny Sunday afternoon visit to the brand showroom pop-up during NYFW in September, I saw firsthand how Thomas imbues customers with intention through her handmade designs, starting from within.
Women of various backgrounds, shapes, and sizes oscillated in and out of the showroom during my visit. Each was met with a warm smile and a welcome from Thomas. Longtime supporters of the brand, self-proclaimed fanatics of crochet and raffia (which many of the brand’s designs feature), and women who were anticipating upcoming vacations in warm-weather destinations found sanctuary in this nook at The Standard East Village Hotel. The brand’s customer is not just one kind of woman, but many kinds, inclusive of age, national background, race, and socioeconomic status. Thomas’ ultimate goal is to dress women globally.
